Context Is In The Details

FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
Matt 2:5
And they told him. “At Bethlehem in Judea, as it is written in the prophet.
FROM: MICHA 5:2-5
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,Yet out of you shall come forth to MeThe One to be Ruler in Israel,Whose goings forth are from of old,From [a]everlasting.”
3 Therefore He shall give them up,Until the time that she who is in labor has given birth; Then the remnant of His brethrenShall return to the children of Israel.4 And He shall stand and feed[b]His flockIn the strength of the Lord,In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God;And they shall abide,For now He shall be greatTo the ends of the earth;5 And this One shall be peace.
LESSON: Yes, Jesus was to be born in Bethlehem but more importantly, Jesus will rule in Israel, feed His flock, rule in majesty of His God. HE is from the beginning of time and for everlasting. He is the Prince of Peace.
Matt 26:24
The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
FROM: ISAIAH 53:4
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
LESSON: The word goeth refers to ones’ manner of death. Without providing the detail Matthew draws our memory to the words of Isaiah that point to the redemptive work of Christ that offers salvation to sinners. All according to the plan of God.
MATTHEW 27:46
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
FROM: PSALMS 22
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?Why are You so far from helping Me,And from the words of My groaning?2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But You are holy,Enthroned in the praises of Israel.4 Our fathers trusted in You;They trusted, and You delivered them. *5 They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed. *
6 But I am a worm, and no man;A reproach of men, and despised by the people.7 All those who see Me ridicule Me;They [b]shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,8 “He [c]trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him;Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” *
9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts.10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s wombYou have been My God.
11 Be not far from Me,For trouble is near; For there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have surrounded Me;Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me.13 They [d]gape at Me with their mouths,Like a raging and roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water,And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax;It has melted [e]within Me. *15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. *
16 For dogs have surrounded Me;The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.They[f] pierced My hands and My feet; *
17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. *18 They divide My garments among them,And for My clothing they cast lots. *
19 But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me;O My Strength, hasten to help Me!20 Deliver Me from the sword,My[g] precious life from the power of the dog.21 Save Me from the lion’s mouthAnd from the horns of the wild oxen!
You have answered Me.
22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him!All you [h]descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;Nor has He hidden His face from Him;But when He cried to Him, He heard. *25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly;I will pay My vows before those who fear Him.26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.Let your heart live forever!
27 All the ends of the worldShall remember and turn to the Lord,And all the families of the [i]nationsShall worship before [j]You. *28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s,And He rules over the nations. *
29 All the prosperous of the earthShall eat and worship; All those who go down to [k]the dustShall bow before Him,Even he who cannot keep himself alive. *
30 A posterity shall serve Him.It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,That He has done this.*
Lesson: In just 4 words Jesus directs us to chapter 21 of Psalms by pointing to the very first verse. A verse that would be well known by the Jews of that day. With their attention directed to this chapter and the details it contains they would be reminded of this messianic prophesy. The events that took place on the cross are recorded here. Even verse 31 states “He has done this”, “It is finished”. We should reconsider our popular interpretation of “being forsaken of the Father” and consider the possibility that Jesus is reminding us that his duty was to fulfill the will of the father and that this was his destiny.
Mark 1:2
As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
FROM: MALACHI 3:1-3
3 “Behold, I send My messenger,And he will prepare the way before Me.And the Lord, whom you seek,Will suddenly come to His temple,Even the Messenger of the covenant,In whom you delight.Behold, He is coming,”Says the Lord of hosts.
2 “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fireAnd like launderers’ soap.3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi,And [a]purge them as gold and silver,That they may offer to the LordAn offering in righteousness.
4 “Then the offering of Judah and JerusalemWill be [b]pleasant to the Lord,As in the days of old,As in former years. 5 And I will come near you for judgment;I will be a swift witnessAgainst sorcerers,Against adulterers,Against perjurers,Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans,And against those who turn away an alien—Because they do not fear Me,”Says the Lord of hosts.
6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.7 Yet from the days of your fathersYou have gone away from My ordinancesAnd have not kept them.Return to Me, and I will return to you,”Says the Lord of hosts.“But you said,‘In what way shall we return?’
Mark 7:6
He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
FROM: ISAIAH 29:13
9 Pause and wonder!Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine; They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.10 For the Lord has poured out on youThe spirit of deep sleep,And has closed your eyes, namely, the prophets; And He has covered your heads, namely, the seers.
11 The whole vision has become to you like the words of a [c]book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, “Read this, please.”
And he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
12 Then the book is delivered to one who [d]is illiterate, saying, “Read this, please.”
And he says, “I am not literate.”
13 Therefore the Lord said:
“Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouthsAnd honor Me with their lips,But have removed their hearts far from Me,
And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
14 Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous workAmong this people,A marvelous work and a wonder; For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.”
15 Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from the Lord,And their works are in the dark; They say, “Who sees us?” and, “Who knows us?”
16 Surely you have things turned around!Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it,“He did not make me”?Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it,“He has no understanding”?
Mark 9:12
He answered and said unto them, “Elijah verily shall first come and restore all things. Also the son of man, as it is written, shall suffer many things, and shall be set at nought.
FROM: ISAIAH 52:2-10
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,And as a root out of dry ground. He has no [a]form or [b]comeliness; And when we see Him,There is no [c]beauty that we should desire Him.3 He is despised and [d]rejected by men,A Man of [e]sorrows and acquainted with [f]grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely He has borne our [g]griefsAnd carried our [h]sorrows;Yet we [i]esteemed Him stricken,[j]Smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But He was wounded[k] for our transgressions,He was[l]bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,And by His stripes[m] we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way;And the Lord [n]has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.8 He was taken from [o]prison and from judgment,And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.9 And [p]they made His grave with the wicked—But with the rich at His death,Because He had done no violence,Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to [q]bruise Him;He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin,He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
Luke 2:22
Now when the period of their purification ended, in accordance with the law of Moses, they took Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, to do as it is written in the law of the Lord,
FROM LEVITICUS 12
12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman has conceived, and borne a male child, then she shall be [a]unclean seven days; as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 She shall then continue in the blood of her purification thirty-three days. She shall not touch any [b]hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are fulfilled.
5 ‘But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her customary impurity, and she shall continue in the blood of her purification sixty-six days.
6 ‘When the days of her purification are fulfilled, whether for a son or a daughter, she shall bring to the priest a lamb [c]of the first year as a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove as a sin offering, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 7 Then he shall offer it before the Lord, and make [d]atonement for her. And she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who has borne a male or a female.
8 ‘And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons—one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be [e]clean.’ ”
Luke 2:23
(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
FROM: EXODUS 13
3 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Consecrate[a] to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”
3 And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of [b]bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 On this day you are going out, in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters. 8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’ 9 It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this [c]ordinance in its season from year to year.
11 “And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 that you shall [d]set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s. 13 But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, ‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.
19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, “God will surely [e]visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”
20 So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.
Luke 3:3 – 4
and he went into all the Jordan-district preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Isaiah, The voice of one who cries in the desert, ‘Make the way ready for the Lord, level the paths for him.
FROM: ISAIAH 40
40 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!”Says your God.2 “Speak [a]comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,That her warfare is ended,That her iniquity is pardoned; For she has received from the Lord’s handDouble for all her sins.”
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:“Prepare the way of the Lord;Make straight [b]in the desertA highway for our God.4 Every valley shall be exaltedAnd every mountain and hill brought low;The crooked places shall be made [c]straightAnd the rough places smooth;5 The glory of the Lord shall be revealed,And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Luke 4: 3-12
3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [c]but by every word of God.’ ”
5 [d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, [e]“Get behind Me, Satan! [f]For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,To keep you,’
11 and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not [g]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
FROM: PSALMS 91:11-12
For He shall give His angels charge over you,To keep you in all your ways.12 In their hands they shall [c]bear you up,Lest you [d]dash your foot against a stone.
Luke 4: 16-21
16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,Because He has anointed MeTo preach the gospel to the poor;He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captivesAnd recovery of sight to the blind,To set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
FROM: ISAIAH 61
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,Because the Lord has anointed MeTo preach good tidings to the poor;He has sent Me to [a]heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captives,And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,And the day of vengeance of our God;To comfort all who mourn,3 To [b]console those who mourn in Zion,To give them beauty for ashes,The oil of joy for mourning,The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness,The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Observation:
Notice in Luke how Jesus refers to Isaiah 61 and quotes only verses 1 and part of verse 2. He then closes the book and tells the people that ” Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Here we see another example Jesus quoting a small portion of old testament scripture to point man to a more comprehensive subject.
JOHN 6:31
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
FROM: EXODUS 16: 11 – 18
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
13 So it was that quail came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. 14 And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
And Moses said to them, “This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ”
17 Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. 18 So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need.
JOHN 12:14-15
And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon, as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion; behold thy king cometh, sitting on an asses colt.
FROM ZECHARIAH 9:9-10
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!Behold, your King is coming to you;He is just and having salvation,Lowly and riding on a donkey,A colt, the foal of a donkey.10 I will cut off the chariot from EphraimAnd the horse from Jerusalem; The battle bow shall be cut off.He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea,And from the River to the ends of the earth.’
ACTS 7:42
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
FROM: AMOS 5:21-27
“I hate, I despise your feast days,And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.22 Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,I will not accept them,Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs,For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.24 But let justice run down like water,And righteousness like a mighty stream.
25 “Did you offer Me sacrifices and offeringsIn the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?26 You also carried [e]Sikkuth[f] your kingAnd Chiun, your idols,The star of your gods,Which you made for yourselves.27 Therefore I will send you into captivity beyond Damascus,”Says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.
ACTS 13:33
that God has completely fulfilled this promise to our children by raising up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘You are My Son; today I have begotten (fathered) You.’
FROM: PSALMS 2:7-12
“I will declare the [g]decree:The Lord has said to Me,‘You are My Son,Today I have begotten You.8 Ask of Me, and I will give YouThe nations for Your inheritance,And the ends of the earth for Your possession.9 You shall [h]break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;Be instructed, you judges of the earth.11 Serve the Lord with fear,And rejoice with trembling.12 [i]Kiss the Son, lest [j]He be angry,And you perish in the way,When His wrath is kindled but a little.Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
ROMANS 1:17
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
FROM: Habakkuk 2:4 NKJV “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.
Lesson: Paul tells us that the righteousness of God is revealed from or out of faith into faith. He continues by quoting this passage in Habakkuk. Here we are told of the proud or unrighteous person and how their soul (faith) is not upright. God will reveal his righteousness to those who live by HIS faith not one of their own making.
ROMANS 2:24

ROMANS 3:1-7
What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? 2 Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the [a]oracles of God. 3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be [b]true but every man a liar. As it is written:
“That You may be justified in Your words,And may overcome when You are judged.”
5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.) 6 Certainly not! For then how will God judge the world?
7 For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say, “Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their [c]condemnation is just.
